VW TL 226 Test Standard for the Effect of Paints on Vehicle Interior Materials

The technical delivery condition TL 226 is a regulation of Volkswagen AG and is used by VW and Audi, others. TL 226 refers to the painted, printed, heat-sealed and coated components of the vehicle interior.

Painted parts are first preconditioned according to TL 226 and then checked for various criteria, including:

  • Adhesion: grid or cross cut DIN EN ISO 2409
  • Scratch resistance (PV 3952)
  • Emission (VW 50180 and its sub-regulations)
  • Temperature resistance: heat storage, climate change testing (Audi: PV 1200, VW: BD 2005)
  • Weather resistance (condensate stable climate according to DIN EN ISO 6270-2, light fastness (PV 1303) and corrosion change test (PV 1210)
  • Resistance to aging: hydrolytic storage, sunlight simulation (DIN 75220) and abrasion resistance (PV 3906)
  • Resistance to the environment: cleaning agents, perspiration and cream (PV 3964)

The tests are often combined, so a storage simulation is usually followed by a paint adhesion and scratch resistance test in addition to visual inspection.
