Extrinsic reliability detection and prevention methods will also be covered, where practical. This document is primarily concerned with electrical/electronic modules (EEMs), but can be easily adapted for use in mechatronics, sensors, actuators and switches.
EEM qualification is the main scope of this document. Other procedures for dealing with random failures are covered specifically in CPI (Component Process Interaction) chapter 10.
This document will be used in the context of the Zero Defect concept for component manufacture and product use.
It is recommended that the robustness of semiconductor devices and other components used in EEM be guaranteed using the SAE J1879 OCT2007, Manual of Ruggedness Verification of Semiconductor Devices in Automotive Applications.
The emphasis of this document is on hardware and manufacturing defect mechanisms, but other current issues shown need to be addressed for a comprehensive Health Verification. A Pareto of contemporary issues is shown in Figure 1.
While this document addresses many of the issues shown, some are beyond the scope of this document and will need to be addressed for a comprehensive RV process implementation. Examples of issues beyond the scope of this document are system interactions, interfaces, functionality, HMI (Human-Machine Interface) and software.
