VDA 270 Odor Test

EUROLAB experts offer odor and conformity service in automobile interior components according to VDA 270 to determine whether undesirable odors are produced in certain climatic environments. We will be happy to provide a service tailored to your needs for a suitable odor test according to VDA 270.

VDA 270 Odor Test

Odor characteristic is the tendency of materials to release volatile substances with a perceptible sourness after storage at the specified temperature and climate. The VDA 270 is suitable for controlling the odor perception of a component, its individual components, as well as the entire component.

In addition to the evaluation from VDA 270, there are other OEM-specific evaluation schemes to further define the fragrance. Organic compounds released from internal components can also be perceived as certain odors. Depending on the OEM's regulations, there may be different rating scales for odor testing (eg 0 to 5 or -3 to +3).

VDA 270 is a widely used method in the automobile industry. This test evaluates odors emitted from parts and materials inside the car under the influence of temperature and climate.

The human nose can detect certain compounds more sensitively than other analytical instruments. Therefore, the tests carried out according to the VDA 270 method are carried out by a 1-person inspection panel, which determines the presence of a particular odor on a scale of 6 to 3.

The test vessel is placed in the test chamber and subjected to a certain temperature for a certain period of time.

The sample material is assigned a variant based on their location in the vehicle and the fragrance is placed inside the neutral closed test vessel.

Warrants 1 and 2: Add 50 ml of deionized water to the test cup, it is evaluated immediately after it is removed from the chamber.

Warrant 3: No water is added to the test cup. It is cooled at (60 + 5)°C before evaluation.

After the evaluation of the three testers, the container is again stored at (80 + 2)°C before being evaluated by the other testers.

The evaluator sniffs and evaluates the intensity of the scent.

The evaluation is made using a 6-degree scale ranging from undetectable to unacceptable.

Our EUROLAB test laboratories are ISO 17025 approved and our experienced staff provides automotive testing services to manufacturer-defined standards.
