AEC Q005 Lead-Free Test Requirements

This standard includes a series of tests and defines the minimum requirements for lead-free (Pb-free) metallurgy qualification for components to be used in any automotive electronics application.

For a component to be considered lead-free, its properties, including but not limited to coating materials and packaging configuration, must be compatible with lead-free manufacturing processes.

Use of this standard does not relieve the supplier of their responsibility to meet their company's internal qualification program. In this standard, "user" is defined as any customer using a component that qualifies for this specification. The user is responsible for verifying and verifying all qualification data proving compliance with this standard.

The purpose of this standard is to determine if a component can pass specified stress tests and therefore can be expected to give a certain level of quality/reliability in practice. The science of mustache growth, including growth models and accelerated testing methods, was not fully understood at the time of publication of this standard. Also, the presence of tin bristles over time does not guarantee component or system failure.

The environmental tests specified in this standard for the evaluation of hair growth require temperature, humidity, and temperature cycling conditions currently believed to best promote hair growth on Sn-coated tips and terminations. The user and supplier need to consider the applicable risks when using components with Sn-coated tips in sensitive applications.
