EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ECE R41 standard. The ECE R-41 regulation published by the European Economic Commission (ECE) regulates the principles for the noise approval of motorcycles.
This technical regulation contains uniform provisions for the approval of vehicles falling into category L3 with respect to noise. Vehicles in the L3 category are two-wheeled vehicles with a cylinder volume greater than 50 cm3 and a maximum speed exceeding 45 km/h without a passenger basket.
The application for approval of an engine speed type with regard to the noise emissions of such motorcycles is made by the manufacturer or its duly approved authorized representative.
At the time of application, a description of the type of engine speed, numbers and symbols describing the type of motorcycle, a list of components that make up the exhaust or muffling system, drawings of the mounted exhaust or muffling system and its position on the engine, drawings of each component for easy placement and identification, characteristics of the materials used, and exhaust Sectional drawings showing the dimensions of the system are presented. In addition, the technical service responsible for carrying out the approval tests may request a sample of the exhaust or muffling system from the engine manufacturer.
The sound emissions of the type of motorcycle submitted for approval must be measured by two methods described in the regulation annex in question: engine speed in motion and engine speed when stationary. The motorcycle manufacturer will not change or adjust any equipment to meet the noise emission criteria of this regulation. Tests are done according to the worst case scenario. The competent authority can perform any test prescribed in this regulation.
