EN 50342-3 Lead Acid Starter Batteries - Terminal System for Accumulators with 36 V Nominal Voltage

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of EN 50342-3 testing. This European Standard applies to lead-acid batteries used for starting, lighting and ignition of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles with a nominal voltage of 36 V.

EN 50342-3 Lead Acid Starter Batteries - Terminal System for Accumulators with 36 V Nominal Voltage

This standard covers the location, design details and dimensions of the battery terminals system. Starter batteries with a nominal voltage of 36 V can have the same dimensions and fastening means as 6 V or 12 V batteries. This may be intentional or unintentional. For this reason, batteries with 36 V nominal voltage must be prevented from being compatible with electrical networks with 6 V or 12 V nominal voltage.

Designing a 36 V termination and contact system in this way should prevent the case from being connected to a 6 V or 12 V power network to avoid serious damage to the 6 V or 12 V power network. For the same reason, the design of the battery terminals must prevent standard commercial jumper cables from contacting the 36 V battery terminals, whether the battery is installed in the vehicle or not. As the final standard may differ from the current draft, the commercial application of this standard must be clearly agreed.

Mechanical stresses should be kept away from the battery bushings. There must be free space next to and behind each terminal for electrical/electronic devices. Additionally, free space can provide the opportunity for mechanical support of cables.

The battery cover surface features six clips for touch protection centrally around each terminal. These clips have grooves on the inside to hold the rotating touch guard. Five of these clips also have grooves on the outside (this cannot be achieved on the sixth groove due to manufacturing process reasons). These grooves can alternatively be used for mechanical fastening of the electrical contact if necessary.
