FORD FLTM BI 104-01 Water Immersion Test for Painted Parts and Panels

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, offers precise and rapid testing services within the scope of FORD FLTM BI 104-01 test. The FORD FLTM BI 104-01 standard developed by Ford Motor Company (FORD) describes a test method used to determine the resistance to failure of painted metal and painted plastic parts and representative test panels when immersed in water.

The vessel used in these tests must be made of a non-corrosive material such as glass, porcelain-coated metal or similar materials. For painted panels, the container should be large enough to accommodate several 10mm by 150mm test panels spaced at least 300mm from each other and from the vessel wall to allow water to flow freely on the painted surface of the part. The vessel is filled with distilled or deionized water, the conductivity should not be greater than 20 micromhos/cm at 10 degrees and maintained at 32 plus/minus 1 degree or as specified using a controlled heater or other suitable means. The purity of the water must be maintained at a maximum total solids content of 5 ppm and a conductivity not exceeding 20 micromhos/cm at 20 degrees.

Water immersion tests form the basis of many different standards. The basic test involves a coated test specimen fully or partially submerged in water under ambient conditions or at elevated temperatures and pressures. The coated samples are then evaluated for any signs of deterioration, including swelling, cracking and loss of adhesion. Briefly, water immersion testing services are performed to determine the resistance of a coating to in-service immersion conditions. This test helps determine the suitability of coatings for corrosion protection throughout their service life.

The immersion test is the most common test to evaluate the corrosion of metals in aqueous solutions. A test sample is completely immersed in a corrosive solution for a period of time and then the sample is removed for examination. The main factors considered under different immersion test conditions are solution composition, temperature, aeration, volume, velocity and waterline effects, sample surface preparation, immersion method of samples, test time and method of cleaning samples.
