OIML R99-1 Instruments for Measuring Vehicle Exhaust Emissions - Part 1: Standard Test for Metrological and Technical Requirements

This International recommendation specifies metrological and technical requirements and tests for digital measuring instruments (hereinafter "instruments") for determining the volume fractions of certain components of exhaust gases from motor vehicles. The conditions that such instruments must meet in order to meet any OIML performance requirements are also determined.

It is particularly applicable to instruments intended for the inspection and maintenance of motor vehicles in use with spark ignition engines and used according to the procedure defined in ISO 3929. These instruments are used to determine the volume fraction of one or more of the following exhaust gas components:

• Carbon monoxide (CO);
• carbon dioxide (CO02);
• Hydrocarbons (HC in n-hexane); and
• Oxygen (O2).

Oxygen is usually measured with a fuel cell. However, it is not intended to exclude other types of instruments that, although based on other detection principles, meet the stated metrological and technical requirements and meet the relevant tests. Three accuracy classes of devices are included, Class 00, Class 0 and Class I.
