The standard applies to the overall effective color of light emitted by the device in any direction, not to the color of light coming from a small area of the lens. Does not apply to pilot, indicator or warning lights.

This standard covers boundary equations and boundary peaks for light emitted from a device to assist in the control of colors used in exterior lighting equipment of motor vehicles in the following colors: red, yellow (amber), selective yellow, white (colourless), green, blue and signal blue. .
In addition, this standard uses two methods to check the color of light coming from the device for compliance with color specifications: the tristimulus method and the spectrophotometric method. Users wishing to utilize the spectrophotometric method when commonly used methods yield questionable results should refer to the ASTM E308 standard (standard practice for calculating the colors of objects using the ASTM E308-18 CIE System).
