Volvo STD 1027-337 Light Exposure - Accelerated Aging of Exterior Material

The “Volvo STD 1027-337 Light exposure - Accelerated aging of external material” standard developed by the Volvo vehicle company describes the artificial accelerated aging test method for external plastic surfaces and painted surfaces. This method is intended to be used for plastic foils for transport and storage purposes applied to painted surfaces.

Volvo STD 1027-337 Light Exposure - Accelerated Aging of Exterior Material

While testing, test pieces are exposed to an artificial light source in a room in the laboratory to achieve accelerated degradation. However, the correlation between test results from accelerated aging and outdoor exposure is not definitive and only applies to certain types of materials and certain properties. This correlation is based on known experience.

Correlation factors for accelerated aging tests can be quite different for different types of finishes or plastic materials.

In terms of its technical content, this standard complies with the following standards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO):

  • ISO 4892-1 Plastics - Methods of exposure to laboratory light sources - Part 1: General guidance
  • ISO 4892-2 Plastics - Methods of exposure to laboratory light sources - Part 2: Xenon arc lamps

The testing room contains an artificial light source. In this room, humidity, light intensity and temperature are controlled and it is possible to spray water on the test pieces. The test chamber has a turntable with holders for the test pieces. This turntable rotates around the light source during exposure. The test equipment includes a water-cooled xenon lamp as the light source. This lamp has external and internal filters. The light from the xenon lamp is filtered to provide a spectral distribution as close as possible to natural sunlight. Spectral light intensity is between 290 nm and 800 nm.

Test pieces must be representative of the product to be tested. The paint is applied to the relevant surface and hardened in the same way as the paint hardens in practice. If possible, flat test pieces sized to fit the sample holders in the test chamber are used.

Before testing, the test parts are conditioned in accordance with the Volvo STD 1021-1 standard.

Exposure times are as follows:

  • For plastic surfaces and painted and coated surfaces: 1500 hours for surfaces representing actual exposure in a vertical position and 2000 hours for surfaces representing actual exposure in a horizontal position.
  • For coated metal surfaces: Recommended exposure time for surfaces represented both vertically and horizontally is 2000 hours unless otherwise stated.
  • For plastic foil (transportation and storage protection): 250 hours.

When evaluating finishes and plastic surfaces, both polished and unpolished surfaces are measured for gloss and color.

When evaluating uncoated plastic surfaces, measurement of color changes after the test is completed is made using the gray scale in the STD 1026-8201 standard. In addition, a general visual check of other surface defects is made. Where relevant, brightness is measured before and after exposure in accordance with standard STD 423-0023.

When evaluating painted and coated surfaces, the gloss before and after exposure is measured according to standard STD 423-0023 and the test pieces are evaluated in the normal way and the color is compared with the unexposed panel according to standard STD 423-0041. Evaluations are made on both polished and unpolished surfaces. A general visual check is also made for other surface defects.

Among the numerous testing, measurement, analysis and evaluation studies it provides for businesses in various sectors, our organization, with its trained and expert staff and advanced technological equipment, also provides testing services in accordance with the "Volvo STD 1027-337 Exposure to Light - Accelerated aging of external materials" standard. gives.
