The thermal behavior is modeled by several distinct, characteristic cable parameters. This approach has an advantage because once these parameters are known the thermal behavior can be done with simple computational processes. This can be done in a variety of ambient conditions.
Starting from known physical parameters (eg specific heat capacity, specific electrical conductor resistance), characteristic cable parameters can be calculated on the basis of known and documented procedures. The calculation is not detailed in this Procurement Specification. However, measurement methods will be specified, which allow verification with the help of several measurements.
If current is flowing through a cable, heating occurs depending on the extent of the conductor resistance, time, and the square of the current. In principle, when heating occurs, dynamic transition state and static state should be distinguished after a long current supply.
The highest temperature occurs in the conductor. When a cable is running, care must be taken not to exceed certain limits for the temperature resistance of the insulation material, taking into account the ambient temperature and self-heating.
