VDA 277 Organic Emission Standard

Volatile pollutant levels can increase when, among other things, polymers are exposed to high temperatures (vehicles under the direct influence of summer sunlight).

VDA 277 Standard Scope

According to VDA 277, testing ensures that materials and polymers used in vehicle interiors are safe and compatible for the consumer. The standard is an internationally accepted method. It involves heating a sample of the material to be tested in a vial using an incubator where the emitted VOCs are then analyzed.

Indoor products are often measured in test chambers. Emissions of volatile organic compounds in these rooms are analyzed for 28 days under defined climatic conditions.

Analysis Methods

An emission laboratory with 20-11 m test chambers is operated. Analysis of VOCs via a GC/mS unit is supported by online measurements with the FID and mS system. Other parameters such as formaldehyde, ammonia and phenols are also tested according to requirements.
