VSTD 19-1 Flammability of Interior Materials of Motor Vehicles

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance service within the scope of VSTD 19-1 standard. The VSTD 19-1 standard specifies the technical requirements and test methods for horizontal flammability of automotive interior materials. This Standard applies to the evaluation of automotive interior materials.

VSTD 19-1 Flammability of Interior Materials of Motor Vehicles

This Standard does not apply to the assessment of all actual flammability of automotive interior materials, as automotive interior parts (parts locations, placement and application conditions, ignition sources, etc.) differ materially from the test conditions specified in this Standard.

If the fire goes out before it reaches the measuring point or stops burning within 60 seconds after it starts counting, if the burning time and burning distance are within 51 mm, the tested sample is considered to have passed this test.

Every material sample to be tested should be a rectangle 100 mm wide and 355 mm long wherever possible. If the thickness of the sample exceeds 13 mm of the material thickness, the sample is cut to the measured thickness from the sample surface closest to the passenger compartment airspace.
other than that of the sole or composite material used in the vehicle. In cases where it is not possible to obtain a flat sample due to surface curvature, the sample is cut at any point no thicker than 13 mm. Where either dimension is less than 355 mm or 100, the maximum usable length of the sample is used.

The sample is produced by cutting the material in the direction that provides the most unfavorable test result. The sample is oriented with the surface closest to the passenger compartment air gap facing down on the test frame. Material with a hairy or tufted surface is placed on a flat surface and combed two more times with a 7 to 8 comb.

What is VSCC Taiwan?

Vehicle manufacturers wishing to export to the Taiwan market must prove that their vehicles comply with the regulations of the Taiwan Vehicle Safety Certification Center (VSCC). The process is relatively complex and requires all testing to be performed by an accredited technical service provider in its own laboratory or at a witness laboratory approved by the Taiwan Ministry of Transport and Communications (MOTC).

Complying with Taiwan vehicle regulations provides many benefits to OEMs and suppliers, including:

  • Assurance that your product complies with all relevant Taiwan vehicle regulations
  • Immediate competitive advantage as your vehicles or vehicle components can be sold directly in the Taiwanese market
  • Faster market access in the future - once a manufacturer is registered with VSCC Taiwan, subsequent certifications for other automotive products are less complex and costly
