SAE J551-1 Test for Levels of Electromagnetic Compatibility of Vehicles, Boats and Machinery

Each section details the requirements for a particular type of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) test and the applicable frequency range of the test method. The methods can be applied to a vehicle or other device powered by an internal combustion engine or electric motor.

The operation of all engines (main and auxiliary) of a vehicle or device is included. All equipment operating normally when the engine is running is included. Operator-controlled equipment is included or excluded as specified in separate document sections. The suggested levels are only valid for completing vehicles in final manufactured form.

Vehicle-mounted rectifiers used for charging in electric vehicles, when operated in charging mode, are covered in Chapter 2 of this document. Additional charger requirements are being developed in SAE J551-5. Emissions from deliberate radiators are not controlled by this document.
