MIL PRF 32440 Standard Test for Performance Characteristics, Coatings, Chip Resistance

EUROLAB, together with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of MIL PRF 32440 testing. This specification covers chip resistant coatings for use in areas of military vehicles or ground support equipment that may encounter wear and tear.

Examples of subject areas are truck bodies and cargo beds, ground support equipment undercarriage, and other areas subject to wear and tear that can corrode the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) and conventional pavements.

The chip resistant coating covered by this specification is designed for use in areas of military vehicles or ground support equipment that may experience wear and tear. Coating is a 100 percent solids, two-component chemical cure primer used to protect profiled, cleaned and (where necessary) primed wood, concrete, rigid plastic, fiberglass, elastomeric plastic.

The coating and lining system is designed to protect against abrasion, stone and gravel impact, mild chemicals, corrosion, vibration and sound emission over a wide temperature range. This material is used in vehicle interior surfaces such as doors and floors, and bearings for wheel arches, undercarriage, footwells, equipment storage areas and tactical, combat and construction equipment.

A durable trowel and repair putty is also covered in this specification. This coating can be made from a wide variety of chemistries such as polyurethane, polyurea and a combination of polyurea and polyurethane (hybrid coating). Regardless of chemistry, the coating may not contain any hazardous TDI or any free MDI monomer or most common MDI or HDI isomers.

The coating may be aromatic or aliphatic in nature. The material can be applied with a variety of application equipment, from high-volume production multi-component equipment to medium-volume static mixing cartridge guns and small-volume spot repair kits.

Approximate film thickness depends on specific application needs. A general guideline is to use approximately 50 mil (0.050 inch) coating thickness in high usage or chip prone areas such as wheel arches, undercarriage and other similar areas, and to use lower film thicknesses (approximately 20 mil) in less demanding application areas such as vehicle interiors.
