MIL STD 130 Identification Marks of US Military Property

MIL STD 130 is “United States Department of Defense's Standard Practices for the Unique Determination of Military Property.” There are several Webscan barcode verifier models designed to support all versions of MIL-STD-130 (L to N). There are models for 2D Data Matrix and Linear 1D barcode grading.

MIL-STD-130L

Print quality for Data Matrix ECC200 barcodes on printed labels is based on the ISO/IEC 16022 specification. Barcodes must be within the 7,5 to 15 mil nominal x size range. Rating will be at 660 nm +/-10 with a test aperture of 45 miles using 5 degree illumination from all four sides. Barcode must pass ISO/IEC 16022 criteria with B grades or better.

For Dot Matrix, Laser, or Chemical Etched Data Matrix codes, the SAE AS9132 specification will be used. Grading is based on AS3 tables with a minimum cell size of 5mil, with cell size not less than 9132million in contract.

MIL STD 130M

The guidelines for using ISO-15415 on printed labels have been changed to allow a single scan to be used to achieve the overall grade. ISO-15415 specifies the use of five scans at angles of incidence to the viewer at 72-degree intervals. This rule has been replaced by MIL-STD-130 as of this revision.

Added exceptions to allow Symbol Contrast (SC) and Modulation (MOD) rating parameters to drop down to 'C' rating. All five other grading parameters must maintain a 'B' grade for the overall grade to pass. Reporting from the verifier should be clear about exceptions.

MIL STD 130N

Changes made in this revision regarding barcodes and quality tests;

The AIM-DPM specification is now permitted along with ISO-15415 and AS9132 for all marking methods. The inspection wavelength for the data matrix symbols was set to 650 nm =/- 20 nm. Diffused or off-axis lighting is added as a light source.

A curved surface rule is added stating that the data matrix code cannot exceed 32 percent of the radius (16 percent of the diameter, 5 percent of the circumference)
GS1 IUID equivalents are allowed instead of the ISO-15434 syntax, which uses the function one (FNC1) character. Linear barcodes receive an exception for verification of UPC/EAN codes with a span of 6mil and a nominal narrow bar spacing of 10,4mil to 26mil.

The MIL-STD-130 standard requires that state-appointed property in the possession of contractors (PIPC) be qualified and final product deliveries or legacy items marked with a machine-readable 2D data matrix barcode. There are several methods allowed for marking; The most common is a polyester or polyimide label (the cheapest is around $3.000) marked with a thermal transfer printer.
