MIL STD 1576 Electroexplosive Subsystem Safety Requirements and Test Methods for Space Systems

The MIL STD 1576 test standard is to protect the safety of launch site facilities and spacecraft from hazards caused by an electroexplosive subsystem inadvertent launch or inability to fire. The requirements and test methods contained in this document are not designed to insure all electroexplosive subsystem performance requirements except where they would endanger the elements.

MIL STD 1576 Electroexplosive Subsystem Safety Requirements and Test Methods for Space Systems

The electroexplosive subsystem consists of all components from the power supply to the EED (electroexplosive device); Safety and Arm devices, Arm/Disarm switches, relays and all electrical wiring used for monitoring, control, arm and fire munitions are specifically included. This Standard applies to all spacecraft systems (e.g. launch vehicles, upper stages, boosters, payloads and related systems using EEDs).

The test methods described here are prepared for:

For electroexplosive subsystems and components, laboratory test conditions should be specified that will produce test results equivalent to those experienced in the real operational environment and that will allow repeatability of test results. Describe all test methods for electroexplosive subsystems and components required to ensure compliance with the specification's requirements.

This Standard applies to the entire electroexplosive subsystem life cycle, until the electroexplosive subsystem is no longer a hazard to personnel, launch site facilities, and manned or reusable space systems. This Standard also applies to expendable launch vehicles presenting such hazards.

This Standard is intended to be used by procuring activities to establish all electroexplosive subsystem safety requirements to be included in specifications for the design and development of new hardware for new or legacy space systems.

This Standard is intended for use by activities and the government security organization for the safety assessment of new equipment in new or legacy space systems, as well as for the safety assessment of previously used equipment in new space systems.

This Standard is not intended for use by activities to establish all performance (rather than safety) requirements to be included in specifications for the design and development of new munitions system hardware for new or legacy space systems, but can be used to establish performance requirements for many electroexplosive subsystems. This Standard does not address elements of explosive trains beyond an EED other than in S&A configurations.

EUROLAB also provides MIL STD 1576 testing services within the scope of other military testing services. Thanks to these services, businesses receive more effective, high-performance and quality testing services and provide safe, fast and uninterrupted service to their customers.
