NIJ 0101.07 Test for Soft Armor Designed for Women

This standard requires additional test shots around the bust cups to ensure that body armor designed for female wearers provides the same level of ballistic protection as armor designed for men in that region.

Designed to increase confidence in the performance of body armor, the new testing method includes build-up testing in the chest area and uses a different firing pattern to fully test women's armor designs. Female (shaped) armor will be tested against the same ammunition used to test planar (non-shaped) armor.

Updating the threat shells used in the tests because changes in threats faced by law enforcement in the field need to be reflected in the ammunition used to test the armor.

Based on input from officers, STC members, and surveys conducted by the Brotherly Police Service, common threats to U.S. law enforcement have been identified and appropriate representatives of these threats are introduced in the new NIJ Threats document.

This standard will serve as the central reference point for all NIJ protective equipment standards that use munitions for testing, such as ballistic shields and ballistic materials, thereby providing greater consistency and compliance across all ballistic-related standards.
