This standard specifies minimum performance requirements and test methods for puncture resistant body armor for protection against stabbing (ie, edged blade and pointed blade) threats for US criminal justice personnel.
The test methods in this standard have been developed and validated for widely available armor designs. Some armor designs may require additions or modifications.
This standard is for puncture resistant panels for trunk protection only and does not address limb protection.
Body armor covered by this standard is classified into two levels of protection based on the mission requirements and threats expected to be encountered in different operational environments:
Commercial threat protection: Commercially produced knives and spikes typically encountered outside of controlled access facilities or inside the prison entrance area.
Impromptu threat protection: Improvised or prisoner-made weapons often encountered in controlled access facilities such as prisons, detention centers and jails.
