Artificial food dyes are unfortunately found in most processed foods. Food dyes are lurking on almost every shelf in grocery stores today. In fact, the consumption of food dyes has increased tremendously in recent years. 90 percent of these dyes come from yellow 5, yellow 6 and red 40 dyes. There are supermarkets these days that do not allow products containing artificial dyes.

Artificial food dyes are not only found in colored beverages and brightly colored candies, there are many packaged products that contain artificial dyes, such as brown cereal and whole wheat pizza crust. However, in some people, food dyes can cause allergies.

Food coloring, commonly referred to as color additives, is commonly found in most foods to enhance color and make products more attractive and appetizing. While many color additives are generally considered safe, studies have identified possible links between consumption of dye-containing foods and increased hyperactivity in children. Despite this, no accepted food safety compliance standard has yet been published.

For example, in the US, children's juice drinks are allowed to contain red dye 40, and colored macaroni and cheeses are allowed to contain yellow dyes 5 and 6. European Union countries mandate label warnings regarding the potential health effects of food coloring. Similarly, the limits of concentrated chemical dyes in food products differ from country to country. Dyes such as azo dyes are banned as food additives and are highly regulated, while others are simply worrisome chemicals that need constant monitoring.

Similar concerns are heard in cosmetics as well as food dyes. Cosmetic products must be produced in accordance with legal regulations and standards announced by international organizations. Especially cosmetics containing heavy metals such as arsenic, cadmium, mercury and lead are dangerous for human health. Some cosmetics (especially face paints) contain metals such as rubber (latex), cobalt and nickel, which can cause sensitization in humans. Especially lead-containing paints are one of the most emphasized paints.
