Detergent and Soap Analysis

Soap is generally not toxic, but most ready-made options, from bar soaps to body washes and shampoos, contain at least potentially harmful ingredients, and even the most natural soaps can be problematic for those with sensitive skin due to the caustic chemicals used in their production.

Detergent and Soap Analysis

Some of the main ingredients of soap to avoid are sodium, lauryl sulfate, parabens and 1,4 dioxane. The best solution to avoid this is to stick to natural ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil and the like. At the very least, use mild soaps such as glycerin soap made with all-natural ingredients.

All soaps (including natural ones) are made using a caustic chemical called lye. This chemical is the main ingredient in most bar soaps, body washes, shampoos and detergents.

Ash water is a metal hydroxide usually obtained by leaching wood ashes or some other water-soluble, highly alkaline substance. This normally takes the form of sodium hydroxide and less often potassium hydroxide. On its own, it is a dangerous substance that causes severe corrosive burns to the skin.

Sodium lauryl sulfate is one of the harmful chemicals in soap. This compound is an extremely common surfactant found in many soaps and cleaning products. Surfactants serve a dual purpose, acting as both a foaming agent and a detergent that removes fats, oils, and grease.

Parabens in soap have a preservative function, extending the shelf life of the product. These compounds are commonly found in soaps, shampoos, detergents, cosmetics and shaving products, as well as a number of processed foods and medicines.

Another common contaminant found in many cosmetic and personal care products is 1,4 dioxane. The worst part about this widely used soap chemical is that it is not listed on any label. However, it is a dangerous carcinogen. Studies have shown that it penetrates the skin easily and overexposure is associated with organ toxicity.
