EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 17270 standard. This standard method applies to the determination of theobromine in compound feed by UV-detection liquid chromatography in the range of 27 to 307 mg/kg tested.
This method has been validated using complementary compound feed for adult dogs and complementary compound feed for horses. Actual operating range may go beyond the tested range.
Alternative chromatography conditions using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) are also provided for the validated 49 to 307 mg/kg range. This method has also been shown to be expedient for the determination of theobromine in chocolate baking by both HPLC-UV and LC-MS/MS.
Theobromine occurs naturally in the cacao tree and its seeds, and therefore in the cacao product and by-products. Cocoa bean husks, cocoa bean pulp, cocoa seeds and discarded confectionery are used for feed purposes in Europe. Maximum theobromine levels in feedstuffs are controlled by EU regulations.
