Shaving and Depilatory Material Analysis

Chemical hair removal products, also called depilatories, are cosmetic products used to remove hair from the skin. This product works by breaking down the sulfur bonds in the keratin of the feather, which is sensitive to strong alkalis and deoxidizing agents. Its active ingredient is a salt of thioglycolic acid. Strong alkalis such as sodium hydroxide are used to retain thioglycolic acid as an active dianion in the product and to obtain a high concentration of hydroxide ions. The most commonly used depilatory agents are thioglycolates and sulphides.

The active ingredients are applied in the form of a cream containing numerous other ingredients such as emollients, emulsifiers, humectants, antioxidants and plant extracts to minimize side effects. Shaving products can contain potentially toxic chemicals that are often avoided.

Depilatory creams and shaving are painless options for hair removal, and both methods remove hair from the skin's surface. Compared to shaving, depilatory creams do not irritate the skin and leave fewer skin lesions or papules. Irritation from depilatory cream usually goes away faster.

Depilatory creams melt hairs just below the surface of the skin, unlike shaving, which removes hairs just above skin level. The way depilatory creams work is that they break down the keratin structure (i.e. proteins) of the hair. This effectively thins and dissolves the base of the hairs when the cream is wiped off. Creams typically contain a number of alkaline chemicals that are formulated to break down these proteins and also be safe for the skin. In fact, different skins have different levels of sensitivity, so it's important to make the right choice.

In general, depilatory creams are considered safe, but people with sensitive skin may experience irritation and discomfort. The main side effects of depilatory creams are skin irritation, chemical burns and allergic reactions. The two main active ingredients of these creams, potassium thioglycolate and calcium hydroxide, form a powerful chemical mixture that can burn if left on the skin for too long.
