ISO 21571 Analysis Methods for the Detection of Foodstuffs, Genetically Modified Organisms and Derived Products

ISO 21571 was created for food matrices, but can also be applied to other matrices such as grain and feed. It is designed as an integral part of nucleic acid-based analytical methods, especially ISO 21569 in qualitative analytical methods and ISO 21570 in quantitative analytical methods.

Soybean lecithin is a common ingredient and is used as an emulsifier in many food products. Soybean lecithin can be produced using genetically modified (GM) or unmodified soybeans. The method described here can be used to extract sufficient DNA to use the DNA to detect the presence of genetically modified DNA sequences from GM soybeans in subsequent PCR analyses.

The method is based on a procedure published in 1998 and was validated in a joint trial in Switzerland with a very similar procedure. In this study, the amount of extracted DNA was determined spectrometrically for interpretation purposes. The Freiburg Institute of Chemistry and Veterinary Medicine, Germany, conducted an additional ring trial with 12 participating laboratories in which the amount of extractable and amplifiable soybean DNA was determined by quantitative real-time PCR.
