The sterile barrier system and opaque protective packaging, if any, should be labeled in such a way that the user can clearly see that he and his contents have undergone a sterilization process. This identification should be made using identification tools, if any, such as the sterile barrier system and process indicators on the opaque protective packaging, or other equivalent means.
If the manufacturer's specifications contain specifications for packaging and labeling of sterile medical devices, they should be followed. For labels affixed to the surface of the packaging material or system, the attachment system must withstand the sterilization process and storage and transport conditions specified by the manufacturer.
The forces generated during sterilization should be taken into account during packaging. Materials or prefabricated sterile barrier systems should not be stretched over instruments or the edges of instrument trays, but must be placed loosely on them to account for pressure variation during sterilization.
