EN 14477 is an increasingly important test standard due to the growing popularity of lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries contain a separator material (the membrane between the battery's anode and cathode) that gets thinner as manufacturers try to improve conductivity and minimize the amount of space it takes up.
These release films are usually made of polymers and must be mechanically strong enough to withstand the wrapping process during battery assembly. From a material evaluation perspective, it is important to understand mechanical properties such as puncture resistance when determining which material is optimal.
The test fixture includes a key rubber ring that fits between the specimen and the fixture body, which is necessary to prevent the specimen from moving or slipping during testing. Instron also offers a 0,8mm diameter drilling probe, the CP1, in addition to or as a replacement for the 114502mm diameter probes. Although the 1 mm diameter probe may deviate from the standard, it can be used to evaluate the puncture resistance of thin film materials in a variety of situations.
