ISTA 1B Package Test

ISTA 1B pass testThe test sequence of includes conditioning, vibration and various types of shock. Conditioning is to ensure that the unit is at ambient temperature. Conditioning and preconditioning are performed to simulate different environments that a package may encounter across the distribution channel. Vibration is a fixed displacement vibration.

Impact testing includes fall, tilt impact, horizontal impact, or swivel edge drop. Only one shock test method should be used. The units do not need to be tested on all three methods. Vibration and shock tests are to simulate the different dangers a package may encounter during deployment.

Fall or impact occurs on each face or side. Drops will take place in a certain order. Impact test should be done on four percent. Rotating edge drop involves removing one edge from the ground three to four inches. This edge of the box is then supported with a timber or support. The other edge is then raised eight inches. The height at which it is lifted is predetermined by a formula that takes into account the weight of the pack. The higher edge is released so that the package falls freely. It is important to drop it on a flat and hard surface.

As with the ISTA 1 A test, only one test unit is required.

ISTA 1B includes three parts:

  • The Overview provides the necessary general information before entering the test lab.
  • The test offers specific instructions for testing in the lab.
  • The report shows what data needs to be saved in order to send a test report to ISTA.
