ISTA 1E Package Test

ISTA Procedure 1E is a requirement to test the unit loads of the same product. This includes testing unit loads of single or multiple products or packages of the same product.

For example, it includes a single unpackaged machine taped to a pallet. This may include a corrugated tray, lid or tube, or shrink or stretch wrap pallets of individual packages.

ISTA 1E is often used as a transit test procedure in the analysis of bulk cargo. This package test standard requires products to go through conditioning, vibration and shock. Conditioning is for temperature and humidity. The aim is to test the package under ambient conditions and the requirement is 12 hours. The vibration test can be vertical linear constant displacement or random. Shock includes horizontal impact, fall of the edge of rotation and the effect of tilt. These are all alternative shock methods. Products should only be tested to one of them.

It is important to note that rotary motion vibration is unacceptable. Fixed displacement vibration test should be vertical linear motion.

ISTA 1E testing is required by several retailers and distributors. This test procedure simulates the hazards that pallets in the supply chain are exposed to. The information obtained can be insightful in determining how many units can safely be placed on a pallet. This testing procedure can save substantial savings by reducing future product damage and returns.
