ISTA 2C Package Test

ISTA Test Procedure 2C summarizes the package test required for furniture packaging. In particular, this procedure involves testing the individually packaged products of furniture (box goods) for shipment.

ISTA 2C Package Test

The pass test for this procedure includes four test sequences. The first is atmospheric preconditioning. The packaging should be kept at room temperature for at least 12 hours before starting the test.

The next set of tests is optional but recommended atmospheric conditioning. During this series, the pack is subjected to one or more of the various conditions. These conditions include extreme cold temperatures, extreme temperatures, high humidity and low humidity. There are also recommended conditions that vary from one range to another. Typical wetting time for conditioning is 72 hours. The purpose of this test is to define the performance of the package within the expected atmospheric limits. This will give the seller an idea of how harmful these extreme ends will be in furniture packaging.

In the ISTA 2C test, the next set of tests is the vibration test. This test sequence requires random testing under a dynamic load. The top load simulates the load on a transport unit installed on the ground in a 108-inch trailer. There are three levels of top load test levels.

The first level is 12 kilos per cube. The second level is 10 kilos per cube. The third level is eight kilos per cube. The third level method assumes that the carrier is using air driving trucks. There are several requirements for top load. It should be larger than the test sample. However, the specimen should not droop more than an inch and a half. It should also spread the weight evenly over the entire test unit.

The posttest sequence is a shock test. The sender will be able to choose a shock test method from one of three different options. The first method available is the drop test. The second method is slope crash test. The final method is a horizontal impact test.
