ISTA 3A Package Test

ISTA Procedure 3A pack test is a standard for testing packets less than 150 pounds. This packet test standard is designed for packaged products for parcel delivery shipments. This test is designed for four different package types. These packages are usually distributed as individual packages by air or land. Types include standard, small, long and flat packs.

ISTA 3A Package Test

Standard packages are defined as any packaged product that does not meet other definitions for a small, flat or long packaged product. These may include conventional chipboard cartons, plastic containers, wooden containers or cylindrical containers.

Small packaged products are defined in size and weight. They cannot exceed 800 cubic inches and their longest size is 14 inches or less. ISTA 3A also requires small packages weighing 10 pounds or less.

The shortest size of flat packed products should be eight inches or less. The next longest dimension is four times or more than the shortest dimension. In addition, the volume must be 800 cubic inches or larger.

Long packs have a size of 36 inches or larger. Also, each of the other dimensions of the package must have a longest size of 20 percent or less. It is important to note that if a packaged product is considered to be both straight and extended, it should be tested as if it were an extended package.

ISTA 3A requires testing a test sample unless the product is considered to be brittle or liquid. A fragile product is defined as a product that can easily break when dropped without protective packaging.

Examples of fragile products include ceramics, clay, electronic glass and porcelain. Liquids include liquids as well as semi-liquids and solids that can be liquid when exposed to temperatures above 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
