This standard covers procedures that can be followed to protect against possible embrittlement of hot-dip galvanized steel after fabrication and outlines test procedures for detecting embrittlement. Manufacturing conditions may predispose some steels to embrittlement, which can be accelerated by galvanization.
However, embrittlement is not common and this discussion does not mean that galvanizing increases embrittlement where good manufacturing and galvanizing procedures are in place.
Where history has shown that certain steels, processes and galvanizing procedures are satisfactory, this history will serve as an indication that no embrittlement problems are expected for these steels, processes and galvanizing procedures.
