Hardenability is a measure of the depth at which the steel will harden when quenched from the austenitizing temperature. It is usually measured quantitatively by noting the degree or depth of hardening of a standard size and shape of the test specimen in a standard quenching process. In the final quenching test, the hardening depth is the distance from the quenched end along the specimen, which is associated with a given hardness level.
