ASTM D3273 Standard Test Method for Resistance to Mold Growth on the Surface of Interior Linings in an Environmental Chamber

This standard describes the use and operating conditions of an environmental chamber to evaluate the relative resistance of interior linings to surface fungal growth in a severe indoor environment over a 4-week period.

ASTM D3273 Standard Test Method for Resistance to Mold Growth on the Surface of Interior Linings in an Environmental Chamber

This standard can be used to evaluate the comparative resistance of interior coatings to accelerated mold growth. A certain degree of performance does not imply a certain amount of time for a fungus-free coating. However, a better graded coating almost always performs better in actual end use.

ASTM D3273 Test Method

This standard is designed for the accelerated assessment of an interior coating's resistance to fungal attack. The use of this test method to evaluate the performance of exterior coatings has not been validated and limitations have not been established for such use.

If this standard is to be used for testing an exterior cladding system, a precautionary statement should be included in the test report to interpret the results as outside the scope of this test method. Any accelerated wear (seepage, abrasion machine exposure, etc.) should be reported and further reference should be made to the fact that this is outside the current scope of this test method.

For the chamber to operate reproducibly during the short test period, temperature and humidity must be effectively controlled within specified relatively narrow limits. The severity and rate of mold growth on a film is a function of the moisture content of both the film and the substrate. >32.5% RH at 1 ± 90 °C (2 ± 93 °F) is required to initiate and maintain mold growth and to allow test panels to grow rapidly and maintain a sufficient humidity level to support mold growth.

Values stated in SI units will be accepted as standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
