This test method is used to measure the resistance of materials used in protective clothing to the penetration of blood-borne pathogens using a surrogate microbe under conditions of continuous liquid contact. Protective clothing material pass/fail determinations are based on detection of viral penetration.
This test method is not always effective for testing protective clothing materials with thick inner liners that readily absorb liquid analysis fluid.
This test method does not apply to all forms or conditions of bloodborne pathogen exposure. Users of the test method should review their worker/clothing exposure modes and evaluate the suitability of this test method for their particular application.
This test method has been specifically defined to model the viral penetration of Hepatitis (B and C) and Human Immunodeficiency Viruses transmitted in blood and other potentially infectious body fluids. Implications for protection from other pathogens should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
This test method only considers the performance of materials used in protective clothing and determined to be viral resistant, or of certain material structures (e.g. seams). This test method does not consider the design, overall construction and components or interfaces of garments, or other factors that may affect the overall protection offered by the protective garment.
Values specified in SI units or other units will also be considered standard. The values specified in each system should be used independently of each other, without combining the values in any way.
