This test method covers the determination of the adhesion strength between layers of fabric bonded with rubber or the adhesion of a layer of rubber in articles made of rubber attached to another material.
They can only be applied when the surfaces to be bonded are approximately flat or uniformly circular, as in the case of tape, hose, tire carcasses or rubber-coated metal sheets.
When the surfaces being bonded contain sharp bends, angles, or other large irregularities that could not be avoided in the preparation of test specimens, special test methods should be used to evaluate adhesion.
These testing methods are used to ensure the quality of a product by determining the force per unit width required to separate a rubber sheet from a flexible substrate such as fabric, fiber, wire, or sheet metal. The measured acceptable adhesion value will of course vary from product to product due to different rubber formulations, flexible substrates and product types. However, once a product has been created, minimum values of separation force can be determined and agreed upon by the manufacturer and consumer, and both may perform monitoring to ensure that the agreed-upon minimum value is maintained.
