It involves the removal of heavy, tightly adherent oxide films from descaling, hot forming, heat treatment, welding and other high temperature processes. However, because mill products are typically supplied in a descaling condition, this process is not usually required during equipment fabrication or systems assembly. It can be done by one or more methods when necessary.
For example, chemical descaling, also known as pickling, uses aqueous sulfuric acid or nitric and hydrofluoric acid, molten alkali or salt baths and various proprietary formulations to remove oxide films.
ASTM A380 details these three services in detail, detailing their acceptable methods for new stainless steel parts, equipment, and systems. The standard does not cover decontamination or cleaning of equipment or systems in service, or descaling and cleaning of materials in the mill.
