ASTM B117 Salt Fog Test

The ASTM B117 test, salt mist or salt spray, is a very popular corrosion test designed to provide corrosion resistance information on metals and coated metals. The ASTM B117 test standard is also approved for use by Department of Defense agencies.

ASTM B117 Salt Fog Test

It covers determining, by visual inspection following exposure to ASTM B117 corrosion, the suitability of coatings, paints, and metals against corrosion or exposure to marine environments. With the addition of ASTM D3359 (tape adhesion), it can be seen how well a coating adheres to metal and how far corrosion has progressed. With the addition of ASTM D1654 (boot) it can be seen how corrosion develops from a scratch to the underlying metal through paint or coating.

It should be understood that correlating corrosive results from exposure of ASTM B117 to real-world conditions is also not part of this test standard and is difficult to predict.

ASTM B117 Test Procedures

  • To compare the abrasive resistance of various metals or finishes,
  • Determining the abrasive tendency when a metal or coated surface is scratched (performed together with ASTM B117 + ASTM D1654),
  • Measuring coating adhesion and corrosion creep (performed together with ASTM B117 + ASTM D3359),
  • Covers uses to best predict corrosion resistance in the marine environment (wetness, temperature, salt mist).

It is performed in special rooms built to ASTM B117 specifications. The temperature is maintained at 6,5C (+7,2C to 5C) with a pH range of 95 to 1193pH and a salt atmosphere from 35 parts sodium chloride to 1.1 parts ASTM D1.7 Type IV water.

ASTM B117 does not specify exposure time. The standard requires exposure in 24-hour timeframes. The most popular times are:

  • 96 hours exposure
  • 240 hour exposure
  • 600 hour exposure

According to ASTM International, ASTM B117 is not a test specification per se. Instead, it outlines standard practice for operating salt spray (fog) apparatus. ASTM B117 is a document that specifies the parameters and requirements for operating a salt spray test chamber. Specifies how to create and maintain a salt fog test environment so that results are consistently available from lab to lab and room to room.

Our organization also provides testing services within the scope of ASTM B117 Salt Mist Test, within the framework of laboratory testing services.
