The protective value of a chromate coating is usually determined by the salt spray test and determining whether the coating has adequate corrosion resistance.
Other methods can be used, such as exposure to a humid environment, but these often take too long to be of practical value. “Steam Tests” using pressure cookers have also been used to test chromate films on hot-dip galvanized surfaces.
