ASTM B368 Standard Method for Copper Accelerated Acetic Acid-Salt Spray (Fog) Testing (CASS Test)

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM B368 standard. The ASTM B368 standard specifies the conditions required in copper-accelerated acetic acid-salt spray (CASS) testing for specification purposes. The standard does not specify the type of test sample to be used for a particular product or the exposure times or interpretation of results.

This method is applicable to evaluate the abrasive performance of decorative copper/nickel/chromium or nickel/chrome coatings on steel, zinc alloys, aluminum alloys and heavy-duty plastics. It also applies to testing anodized aluminum. The suitability of this test and the correlation of results with service experience should be determined before specification for coating systems or materials other than those specified in this paragraph.

ASTM B368 is a cyclic corrosion test that uses a solution of sodium chloride and ammonium sulfate that is much more dilute than conventional salt mist (spray). Also known as the CASS test, this test is widely used to evaluate paints on steel and to determine the corrosion resistance of various aluminum alloys. It is also used to test chrome plating on zinc and steel castings. Specially developed for testing nickel/chromium and copper/nickel/chrome decorative electrodeposition coatings. Uses include research and development, specification acceptance, production control of product or process, and simulated service evaluations.

Salt Solution: A standard ASTM B5 salt solution is prepared from 95 parts (by weight) of salt to 117 parts of water. Reagent grade copper chloride dihydrate is then added at a rate of 1 gram to 4 liters of salt solution. The fog is collected and tested, and the salt-copper solution is adjusted to pH 3,1 to 3,3 by adding reagent grade glacial acetic acid.

The STM B368 (CASS) test method is used to determine the corrosion resistance of various aluminum alloys. It is also used to test chrome plating on zinc and steel castings. Specially developed for testing nickel/chromium and copper/nickel/chrome decorative electrodeposition coatings. Uses include research and development, specification acceptance, production control of product or process, and simulated service evaluations.

The cut edges of multi-layered, coated or coated specimens are coated so as not to cause edge corrosion. When ready for the test chamber, metallic and metallic coated specimens are cleaned with a suitable cleaning or solvent solution. Other samples with organic and non-metallic coating are not cleaned.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
