ASTM B827 testing, MFG (mixed flowing gas) tests are used to simulate or magnify exposure to environmental conditions that electrical contacts or connectors can be expected to experience in a variety of application environments. The ASTM B827 test is a type of laboratory environment test for products, especially electronic products, to evaluate resistance to corrosion from atmospheric gases.

Test specimens subjected to MFG tests range from bare metal surfaces to electrical connectors and complete assemblies. Specific test conditions are often chosen in the testing laboratory to simulate the effects of certain representative field environments or environmental severity levels on standard metallic surfaces such as copper and silver coupons or porous gold platings. Because MFG tests are simulations, both test conditions and degradation reactions (chemical reaction rate, composition of reaction products, etc.) may not always be similar to those found in the service environment of the product tested in MFG testing.

The Mixed Flowing Gas (MFG) test is a laboratory test that measures temperature (°C), relative humidity (%RH), concentration of gaseous pollutants (parts per billion, ppb, or parts per million), and other critical variables. (such as volume change rate and airflow rate) are carefully defined, monitored and controlled. 

The purpose of the ASTM B827 test is to simulate the phenomenon of corrosion from atmospheric exposure. The electronic product is exposed to gases such as chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide at levels in the ppb range in a controlled environmental chamber.

Test specimens subjected to ASTM B827 testing range from bare metal surfaces to electrical connectors and complete assemblies. With respect to noble metal-plated connector applications, MFG testing has been widely accepted as a proficiency testing method for evaluating the performance of these connectors.

Standard MFG test chamber specifications are as follows:

  • Multiple gas atmospheres controllable parts per billion (ppb)
  • No time limit on exposure
  • Temperature and humidity control
  • Room size: 24 inches wide by 28 inches long and 15 inches high

As the ASTM B827 Mixed-flow gas (MFG) test is an accelerated testing method, determining the acceleration factor will aid in understanding the durability or reliability of the device under test.
