ASTM B839 Standard Test Method for Residual Brittleness in Metallic Coated, Externally Threaded Products, Fasteners, and the Rod-Inclined Wedge Method

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM B839 testing. This test method involves determining, statistically, the probability of the presence of hydrogen embrittlement or degradation in:

ASTM B839 Standard Test Method for Residual Brittleness in Metallic Coated, Externally Threaded Products, Fasteners, and the Rod-Inclined Wedge Method

  • A group of drums electroplated, autocatalytically coated, phosphated or chemically treated threaded articles or fasteners and;
  • A group of rack-covered threaded objects, fasteners, or rod.

Industrial practice for threaded objects, fasteners and rod has developed three levels of test exposure to ensure the risk of hydrogen embrittlement is reduced. These levels have evolved from commercial applications with varying levels of criticality. In essence, they represent the level of trust required. They also represent the amount of time that finished products are kept before they are shipped and used.

This test method is applicable to threaded objects, fasteners and bar made of steel or surface-hardened threaded objects, fasteners or rod with hardness values ≥ 1000 MPa (300 HV 10 kgf , 303 HB or 31 HR c).

This test method should be performed after hydrogen embrittlement heat treatment in accordance with the requirements of Guide B850. It can also be used to evaluate differences in machining solutions, conditions and techniques.

This test method has two main functions:

  • The former can be used for batch acceptance or rejection when used in conjunction with a statistical sampling plan;
  • Second, it can be used as a control test to determine the effectiveness of various processing steps, including preliminary preparation.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
