ASTM D2161 Test for Conversion of Kinematic Viscosity to Saybolt Furol Viscosity

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ASTM D2161 testing. This standard specifies conversion tables and equations for converting kinematic viscosity in mm 2 /s at any temperature to Saybolt Universal viscosity in seconds (SUS) at the same temperature and converting kinematic viscosity in mm 122 /s at 2 °.

ASTM D2161 Test for Conversion of Kinematic Viscosity to Saybolt Furol Viscosity

Saybolt Furol viscosity in Saybolt Furol seconds (SFS) at temperatures between F and 210 °F (50 °C and 98,9 °C). Kinematic viscosity values are based on water at 68 °F (20 °C) at 1.0034 mm 2 /s (cSt).

If a method other than Test Method D445 is used to generate the kinematic viscosity data, apply the appropriate relative bias correction factors found in the precision section of that method before performing the calculations for this application.

The equations in D2161 were originally derived empirically using data from both D445 and the Saybolt viscometer method. Therefore, it can be assumed that an error may occur if the deviation correction of the kinematic viscosities used is not made according to the D445 results. It is recommended to report kinematic viscosity in square millimeters/second instead of Saybolt Universal Seconds (SUS) or Saybolt Furol Seconds (SFS). This method is kept for the purpose of calculating kinematic viscosities from SUS and SFS data appearing in the past literature. One square millimeter per second (mm 2 /s) is equal to one centistoke (cSt), another unit commonly found in ancient literature.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for reference only. The SI unit of kinematic viscosity is mm 2 /s.

Fahrenheit temperature units are used in this application as they are accepted by the industry for the legacy conversion types described in this application.

This standard does not purport to address all safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
