ASTM D6654 includes determining the basic storage stability of a glued mechanical pump dispenser when stored in a product in different environmental atmospheres. It also evaluates the weight lost during storage.
This test applies to products intended for consumer use. Such products include: personal care, home, insecticides, food, automotive and institutional structure. Please note that pharmaceutical and cosmetic products (perfumes) are not covered by ASTM D6654.
The following apparatus is required to protect certain environmental environments for testing:
Each container must be filled with the amount of product, which should be an accurate representation of the amount intended for customer use. Optional food coloring or paint can be added to the product, so any leakage can be more easily identified.
At this point, mechanical pump dispensers should be installed in the product container at the recommended minimum torque load. Record the weight and the starting weight of each pack. Place the test specimens in their media designated according to their labels for storage. Mechanical pump dispensers should be stored without protective devices (protective cap or top cap). If the dispensers have a locking feature, they should be stored in the locked position. It should be removed from the sample medium once a week for the next four (4) weeks.
The balance, which usually takes 4-6 hours, should be removed over time to allow them to reach the ambient temperature. After reaching the desired temperature, it should be checked for leaks. After the inspection, weigh and record the new weight of each pack. The lab will calculate the gross weight loss and weight loss percentage of the package using the new weight and initial weight.
At the end of the four (4) week test period, each non-primary mechanical pump dispenser will be evaluated on:
The sample will be examined and tested to assess if the spray or flow of the product is defective or blocked. Defective packages may require future inspection. Finally, a report will detail the findings of each test for four (4) weeks. The report will comply with the guidelines set out in ASTM D6654.
