ASTM D7946 Initial PH (I-PH), Standard Test Method for Value of Petroleum Products

In new and used oils, components that might be considered to have properties that affect the i-pH value include organic and inorganic acids, esters, phenolic compounds, lactones, resins, heavy metal salts, ammonia salts, and other weak substances.

This test method is used to indicate relative changes in oil, regardless of color or other properties of in-service lubricants, during use under oxidizing conditions or due to contamination by blow-off gases from biogas combustion processes.

Although the initial pH is made under certain equilibrium conditions, the purpose of the test method is not to measure an absolute acidic property that can be used to predict the oil's performance under service conditions. A general relationship between corrosion of non-ferrous metals and the initial pH is not known.
