This standard does not meet all the requirements that may be required for possible hybrid configurations where an EPU and an internal combustion engine drive a common propellant. This standard can be used for EPU aspects with additional requirements for the propellant and internal combustion engine.
This standard does not include requirements for EPUs with gearboxes, thrusters, liquid cooling/lubrication, or any energy storage system. This specification can be used for EPU core features, with supplementary requirements for these additional features. This version of this ASTM standard also does not address all the requirements for configurations of motor-driven ducted fans.
Where applicable, this specification may be used for EPUs with fixed pitch propellers or fans. These configurations can be type-approved as an EPU with a thruster. There may be additional requirements for this type of configuration that are not currently covered in this specification. This standard recognizes that the EPU may not have an integrated thruster, but must be tested with a representative load on the driveshaft to ensure that the EPU can function properly with static and dynamic loads.
