The ASTM C1104 test covers the determination of the amount of water vapor absorbed by mineral fiber insulation exposed to a high humidity atmosphere. This test method is only applicable to fibrous base material and binder. Because the coating was not tested using this test method, the results obtained with this test method cannot be used to identify faceted products.
The water vapor absorption properties of materials can be affected by conditions such as high temperatures or chemical exposures. The values obtained as a result of this test method may not adequately describe the water vapor absorption properties of materials exposed to these conditions.
The term sorption has been adopted for this test method because mineral fiber insulation absorbs water in its mass when viewed macroscopically, while at a microscope scale it absorbs water onto individual fibers.
The insulation is dried to a constant weight and exposed to a high humidity atmosphere for 96 hours. The amount of water absorbed from the vapor phase is the difference in sample weights and is expressed as a percent by weight or volume.
Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.
