The ASTM C165 test covers two procedures for determining the compressive strength of thermal insulations.
Procedure A covers thermal insulations that have an approximate straight line portion of a load deformation curve but may or may not have an identifiable yield point as shown. 1 and 2. This behavior is typical for most rigid slab or block type insulation.
Procedure B covers thermal insulations that become progressively stiffer as the load increases, as shown. This behavior is typical of fibrous batt and blanket insulations that have previously been compressed to at least the same deformation by compression packing or mechanical softening.
It is recognized that the classification of materials under Procedures A and B may not be applicable in all situations. For example, some non-compression-packed felt or cover materials will behave more typical of Procedure A for their initial loading. In addition, some pre-compressed high-density fibrous insulation boards will exhibit load deformation curves that are more specific to Procedure B.
There will also be thermal insulations with load deformation curves that do not follow any of the three types shown; that is, curves without straight lines, curves with compression areas, and curves that change from negative to positive slope. This test method does not cover reflective or loose fill insulations.
