ASTM C1763 Standard Test Method for Water Absorption by Immersion of Thermal Insulation Materials

The ASTM C1763 standard specifies the amount of water (excluding surface water) retained by flat thermal insulation samples after these materials have been completely immersed in liquid water for a predetermined time interval under isothermal conditions.

This test method is designed to be used for the characterization of materials in the laboratory. It is not intended to simulate any special environmental conditions potentially encountered in building construction practices.

This test method does not consider all possible water uptake and retention mechanisms and related phenomena for thermal insulation. Determining moisture accumulation in thermal insulation due to partial immersion, water vapor transmission, internal condensation, freeze-thaw cycle or a combination of these effects requires different test procedures. This test method does not consider or attempt to measure the drainage properties of materials.

This test method provides a means to measure the water absorption of flat samples of thermal insulation materials under isothermal conditions as a result of direct immersion in liquid water. It is designed for quality control and product and material specifications. Procedure to be used: Exceptions should be specified in material specifications A, B, or C, as well as referenced to this test method.

Repeatability has been determined for only one type and size of material at one immersion time. Specifications that refer to this test method are encouraged to establish repeatability for certain materials, immersion time and dimensions for inclusion in this test method.

Values ​​stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values ​​specified in each system are not necessarily exact equivalents; therefore, to ensure compliance with the standard, each system should be used independently of the other and the values ​​obtained from the two systems should not be combined.
