ASTM C1856 Standard Practice for Manufacturing and Testing Ultra High Performance Concrete Samples

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ASTM C1856 standard. The ASTM C1856 standard covers procedures for producing and testing samples in the laboratory and in the field using a representative sample of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) to determine material properties.

ASTM C1856 Standard Practice for Manufacturing and Testing Ultra High Performance Concrete Samples

This application is tested with nominal maximum size aggregate from 5 mm [ 1/4 inch] and 200 and 250 mm [8 and 10 inch] as measured by the modified flow chart test described.

Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is a cementitious concrete material with specified strength, tensile ductility, and toughness requirements and a minimum specified compressive strength of 17.000 pounds per square inch (120 MPa); fibers are often included in the blend to meet specified requirements.

Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) is also known as reactive powder concrete (RPC). The material is typically formulated by combining portland cement, additional cementitious materials, reactive powders, limestone and/or quartz flour, fine sand, high water reducers, and water. The material can be formulated to provide compressive strengths in excess of 200 pounds per square inch (psi) (29.000 MPa). The use of thin materials for the matrix also provides a dense, smooth surface that is valuable for its aesthetics and ability to convey form details closely to the hardened surface. When combined with metal, synthetic or organic fibers, it can achieve flexural strengths of 7.000 psi (48 MPa) or more.

Fiber types often used in UHPC include high carbon steel, PVA, Glass, Carbon or a combination of these types or others. The ductile behavior of this material is a first for concrete, with its capacity to deform and support flexural and tensile loads even after initial cracking. The high compressive and tensile properties of UHPC also facilitate a high bond strength allowing shorter lengths of rebar embedding in applications such as closure castings between precast members.

UHPC construction has been simplified in some applications by eliminating the need for reinforcing steel and the high flow properties of self-compacting materials. The UHPC matrix is very dense and has a minimal unconnected pore structure resulting in low permeability (less than 0,02 x 10-12 m2/s Chloride ion diffusion. The low permeability of the material prevents the ingress of harmful materials such as chlorides providing superior durability properties.

Values stated in SI units or inch-pound units will be considered standard separately. The values specified in each system may not be exactly equivalent; therefore, each system should be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-compliance with the standard.

If required results from another standard are not reported in the same system as the units used in this standard, conversion of these results using conversion factors found in the SI Quick Reference Guide is permitted.

The text of this standard refers to notes and footnotes that provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (except in tables and figures) will not be considered requirements of this standard.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.
