ASTM C203 Test Standard for Breaking Load and Flexural Properties of Block-Type Thermal Insulation

The ASTM C203 standard, published by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), covers the determination of the breaking load and calculated flexural strength of a rectangular section of preformed block-type thermal insulation tested as a simple beam. It also applies to cellular plastics. It includes two test methods:

ASTM C203 Test Standard for Breaking Load and Flexural Properties of Block-Type Thermal Insulation

Test Method I - A loading system using center loading on a simply supported beam supported at both ends.

Test Method II - A loading system that uses two symmetrical load points equally spaced from adjacent support points at both ends and a distance between the load points of one half the support span.

Both test methods can be used with four procedures:

Procedure A - Mainly designed for materials that break at relatively small deflections.

Procedure B - Specially designed for materials subject to large deflections during testing.

Procedure C - Designed to measure at a constant strain rate using a CRL (constant load rate) machine. It is used only for breaking load measurements.

Procedure D - Designed for measurements at constant crosshead speed using a CRT (constant traverse rate) or CRE (constant elongation rate) machine. It is used to break load measurements using a fixed crosshead speed machine.

Comparative tests may be performed according to the method or procedure, provided that the method or procedure is found to be satisfactory for the material being tested. These test methods are purposely general to accommodate a wide variety of industry applications. It is important for the user to refer to the appropriate material specifications for any special detailed requirements regarding these test methods.

Values stated in SI units should be accepted as standard. Values in parentheses are for informational purposes only.

This standard does not purport to address all, if any, safety concerns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health and environmental practices and to determine the applicability of regulatory restrictions prior to use.

Our organization also provides testing services to enterprises within the scope of the test standard for breaking load and bending properties of ASTM C203 block type thermal insulation within the framework of laboratory testing services.
